• Non pre-shrunk fabrics such as 100% Cotton, 100% Linen and cotton-linen can shrink up to 20% with washing. Shrinkage of up to 5% can be expected with dry cleaning.
• Up to 6% is standard shrinkage for pre-shrunk fabric made from natural fibres and up to 3% for pre-shrunk acrylic, polyester and poly/cotton blends.
• Natural fibres absorb moisture and lengthen and shorten with changes in humidity.
• Curtains tend to drop once they have been hung. The fabric weight, curtain length and region will influence the droppage of the curtain.
• The uneven weave of hand-loom fabrics is characteristic of this type of fabric and adds to its appeal. Use a thick lining if you wish to avoid colour change in curtains.
• All silk is sensitive to light and curtains must be lined with lining to protect the face fabric.
• All fabrics fade if not protected from sunlight. Curtains should be lined and only fabrics specially treated for sun resistance can be left outside for a prolonged period of time.
• All printed fabric is sensitive to light and it is advisable to keep away from direct sunlight.
• Avoid cleaning agents with optical brighteners, which may cause fabric to look dull. This should not be confused with fading.
• Fabrics with float at the back must be lined if the intended use is for curtaining.
• Do not spot rub or scrub printed fabrics. Use a concealed spot to test any chemicals.
• Upholstered furniture and curtains should be dusted, vacuumed or brushed regularly.
• All printed and woven patterns exhibit skewness. International tolerance is 2.5% across the width.
• Always cut (not tear) curtain drops and work out pattern repeat requirements (with special attention to half drop repeats) before cutting the fabric.
• Chintz and calendared fabrics must be washed and ironed gently as rough treatment will affect the glaze.
• Teflon coated fabric will regain its fabric protection after washing or dry-cleaning.
• Fabric protection treatment is recommended for upholstery.
